How does SPPU classify first class, distinction, and second class based on CGPA?

 At Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) under the CBCS system, the final degree classification (First Class, Distinction, Second Class, etc.) is based on the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) obtained at the end of the program. Here’s the standard classification:

SPPU Degree Classification Based on CGPA

ClassificationCGPA RangeApprox. Percentage Equivalent
Distinction≥ 7.50≥ 70%
First Class6.50 – 7.4960% – 69%
Second Class5.50 – 6.4950% – 59%
Pass Class4.00 – 5.4940% – 49%
Fail< 4.00< 40%

Key Notes

  1. Distinction is awarded only if the student has no backlog in any course.

  2. The CGPA to percentage conversion often uses the formula:

Percentage=CGPA×10\text{Percentage} = \text{CGPA} \times 10
  1. Second Class indicates satisfactory performance, while First Class reflects consistently good academic performance.

  2. This classification is applied to the final CGPA at the end of all semesters.
