🎩 How to Tie a Tie (Four-in-Hand Knot)
1. Start Position
-
Drape the tie around your neck.
-
The wide end should hang about 30 cm (12 inches) lower than the narrow end.
2. Cross Wide Over Narrow
-
Move the wide end across the front of the narrow end, from left to right.
3. Bring It Behind
-
Pass the wide end behind the narrow end, right to left.
4. Wrap Around Again
-
Bring the wide end across the front again (left to right).
-
You’ll now see a loop forming in front.
5. Go Up and Through
-
Take the wide end up through the neck loop (between your collar and tie).
6. Pull Through the Front Loop
-
Slide the wide end down through the loop you just made in front.
7. Adjust the Knot
-
Hold the knot gently and pull the wide end down to tighten.
-
Slide the knot up toward your collar until snug.
🧑💼 Other Common Knots
-
Half Windsor – medium size, neat and triangular.
-
Full Windsor – wide and formal, great for weddings/business.
-
Pratt Knot (Shelby Knot) – balanced, works well with most fabrics.
📌 Quick Tips
-
Choose knot size based on collar type:
-
Narrow collars → Four-in-Hand or Half Windsor.
-
Wide collars → Full Windsor.
-
-
Keep the tie length so that the tip of the wide end just touches your belt buckle.
-
Smooth out wrinkles in the knot for a clean look.
