Can CGPA and SGPA values differ for the same semester?

 No — for a single semester, the SGPA and the CGPA (for that semester alone) will be exactly the same. Here’s why:

1. SGPA

  • SGPA is the weighted average of grade points for all subjects in that semester.

2. CGPA

  • CGPA is the cumulative weighted average of all semesters completed so far.

  • If you are considering only one semester, then the cumulative average is just that semester.

CGPA after 1 semester=SGPA of semester 1\text{CGPA after 1 semester} = \text{SGPA of semester 1}

3. When CGPA and SGPA differ

  • CGPA will differ from SGPA only after more than one semester.

  • Example:

SemesterSGPACGPA (cumulative)
18.08.0
29.0(8×credits1 + 9×credits2) / (credits1+credits2)

So CGPA is a weighted average of multiple SGPAs, not just one.

In short: For the same semester alone, CGPA = SGPA. The values start differing only when you calculate CGPA across multiple semesters.
