1. What is SGPA?
SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average.
-
It measures a student’s performance in a single semester.
-
Like CGPA, it’s on a 0–10 scale.
-
Each subject’s grade points are weighted by its credits.
Formula to calculate SGPA:
Note: This is exactly the same formula as CGPA, but applied only to one semester.
2. Example of SGPA
Suppose in Semester 3, a student has these grades:
Subject | Credits | Grade | Grade Points |
---|---|---|---|
Maths | 4 | A | 8 |
Physics | 3 | B+ | 7 |
Chemistry | 3 | O | 10 |
Step 1: Multiply grade points by credits:
-
Maths: 8 × 4 = 32
-
Physics: 7 × 3 = 21
-
Chemistry: 10 × 3 = 30
Step 2: Sum them: 32 + 21 + 30 = 83
Step 3: Sum total credits: 4 + 3 + 3 = 10
Step 4: Divide: 83 ÷ 10 = 8.3 SGPA
3. Difference between SGPA and CGPA
Feature | SGPA | CGPA |
---|---|---|
Meaning | Semester Grade Point Average | Cumulative Grade Point Average |
Scope | One semester only | All completed semesters |
Formula | Weighted average of grades in that semester | Weighted average of all grades across semesters |
Use | Shows performance in a single semester | Shows overall performance throughout the course |
✅ Key point:
-
You first calculate SGPA for each semester.
-
Then CGPA is calculated using all SGPAs, weighted by semester credits.
