What is SGPA in SPPU and how does it differ from CGPA?

 1. What is SGPA?

SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average.

  • It measures a student’s performance in a single semester.

  • Like CGPA, it’s on a 0–10 scale.

  • Each subject’s grade points are weighted by its credits.

Formula to calculate SGPA:

SGPA=(Grade Points×Credits)(Credits)\text{SGPA} = \frac{\sum (\text{Grade Points} \times \text{Credits})}{\sum (\text{Credits})}

Note: This is exactly the same formula as CGPA, but applied only to one semester.

2. Example of SGPA

Suppose in Semester 3, a student has these grades:

SubjectCreditsGradeGrade Points
Maths4A8
Physics3B+7
Chemistry3O10

Step 1: Multiply grade points by credits:

  • Maths: 8 × 4 = 32

  • Physics: 7 × 3 = 21

  • Chemistry: 10 × 3 = 30

Step 2: Sum them: 32 + 21 + 30 = 83

Step 3: Sum total credits: 4 + 3 + 3 = 10

Step 4: Divide: 83 ÷ 10 = 8.3 SGPA

3. Difference between SGPA and CGPA

ScopeOne semester onlyAll completed semesters
FormulaWeighted average of grades in that semesterWeighted average of all grades across semesters
UseShows performance in a single semesterShows overall performance throughout the course

Key point:

  • You first calculate SGPA for each semester.

  • Then CGPA is calculated using all SGPAs, weighted by semester credits.
